"If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder... he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, the excitement and mystery of the world we live in.”

-Rachel Carson
“The Sense of Wonder”

4-H Wildlife Stewards Habitat Education Sites are outdoor learning centers that can open up all kinds of wonderful learning opportunities for students and teachers alike. Research has demonstrated that children learn best though hands-on experiences. The Habitat Education site is an extension of the classroom and becomes a dynamic learning laboratory for students to explore, discover, and investigate. There is nothing more rewarding than to watch a child glow with excitement as they uncover a new discovery in the habitat. The learning opportunities are limitless and they begin the moment the idea for creating the site is introduced. Engaging students in the process of developing the plan, mapping and inventorying the site, and creating the design are all important steps in the learning process.

One of your roles as a 4-H Wildlife Steward or teacher is to help students discover the joy, the excitement and mystery of the world we live in. Students will also learn through the process -teamwork, responsibility, communication skills, and planning skills.

Use the Habitat Education Site as the education tool to improve science learning for your students and to open up the many exciting learning opportunities that are there right outside the classroom door.
