Several free water quality programs ready for classroom or community education group. Green City Data Project. This involves middle and high school students in collecting environmental data to support regional planning and management. Coordinated with a consortium of public and private agencies.

The Columbia River: It’s Future and You. Curriculum about the Columbia River, including it’s history, Native Americans, navigation, power production, fisheries, industrial uses and recreation. With a choice of an elementary or secondary set, this guide addresses the issue that the river is not a limitless resource to exploit.

Adopt a SNOTEL. This program encourages schools to get involved with snow surveys and water supply forecasting by utilizing data from the snowpack telemetry system.

Wetlands. Illustrated children’s guide to wetland plants and animals. A Spanish language edition, “Los Humedales,” is also available.

Wetland Tales. A collection of 10 stories about wetlands originating in the oral tradition of native cultures from three continents. Each story has background test and a brief synopsis. Discover Wetlands. A curriculum guide. Activities address the definition of a wetland, wetland field studies, wetland functions, and human impacts on wetlands. Grades 4-8.

Clean Water, Streams and Fish: A Holistic View of Watersheds. With a focus on the salmon life cycle and habitat, this two volume curriculum for elementary and secondary students discusses water quality, streams, and watersheds.

Large USGS maps of the Portland area have elevation contours to help students “map” the borders of their watershed.

Investigating Your Environment, Fire Ecology

The World Forestry Center is an independent, non-profit educational institution whose mission is to promote the establishment, protection, and management of global forests and related resources through research and education. They offer guided museum tours, field trips, curriculum, resource materials, and other special programs.
